Donnie Darko

September 28, 2008

Alright, I chose this movie not because there is a brother-sister duo as a starring role but the message is a freaky type, rabbit through the rabbithole type of movie. Donnie Darko is the movie I chose this week due to the complexity of the movie. You may think that you have a clue about what is going on in the movie but once you really get into it then you start to understand.

Donnie Darko takes a dark loo intoa family in the suburbs. The Darko family is like your average family Mother,Father and three great children. The middle child, who happens to be the only boy in the family is diagnosed with a bipolar disorder and is given medicine to put it at bay. This is where the trouble begins, we first meet Donnie when he is sleeping in a golf course and is woken by some golfers. Pretty soon after that Donnie is met with strange visions and becomes friends with a  man dressed in a rabbit suit, named Frank.

Here’s a Trailer:

Little does the audience remebers when they watch this that the Tanget Universe in ending and there is really nothing that can be done, at least I don’t think so. But while in the process of having these “conversations” with Frank, Donnie goes on a little call of duty message. He vandalizes his schools statue, burns a local star’s home, but also leades to the aresst of the owner, due to some quite disgusting photos found in his basement. So I guess there was some god to come out of it. Pretty soon times start to end and Donnie is starting to figure it out. Donnie feels like he is the messenger and he has done everything that he can do.Until Everyone invovled wakes up!

There is a song played towards the end of the movie called “Mad World.” The song was originally song by the 80s Band Tears for Fears, but for the movie it was remade by Gary Jules The dark and erie tone of the song sets the mood for what is about to happen to Donnie and his family.

I would recommend this movie to anyone that is of age. Due to the fact that the movie is Rated-R. But there is great cameos made by Drew Barrymore and Patrick Sawyze.

Fight With Tools

September 26, 2008

They aren’t against are government..They don’t agree with the policies and the war. They want to make the world a better place. Starting with us! The band is Detroit-based Flobots. The band uses a classically trained violinist as well a jazz trumpeter, the bands uses knowledge, not curse words and demoralize women and others with their music. They make and take time carefully making music and letting people know how they are.

This band has been only know for in the underground music scene in Detroit, with the first release of there album, Platypus, in 2005. Fight with Tools was released in 2007, it was so big in the underground scene that it topped the charts in a magazine, Twist and Shout, no longer being published. The first song that was released into mainstream radio was the song “Handlebars”

If you ask me, this song was as if it is a war cry for all who will listen… Take the fact it started off as two friends who leave each other at a corner, both to embark on the great aspects of life. One becomes a great community leader, while the other becomes a money loving CEO of a company. Pretty soon the friends meet up again, but to untimely endings. One dies to a gunshot, while the other from a podium realizing  his error.

The bands have catchy tunes, that bring a message of coming together and putting an end to what they call the “overpowering” government… Songs range from “Anne Braden”, a song about a white woman fought to bring racial eqaulity in the South.

would go get this album, if you want to make a difference in the United States this album gives you that boost.

Until Next Time……. Stay Fly

Madea’s Family Reunion

September 20, 2008

Tyler Perry is an Arfican American Playwright who is know for producing, starring and directing in the majority of his palys and movies. Yet with every play Perry puts in a sense of love with Christ and the humor of that will keep you stiches. Today the movie I am going to review is Madea’s Family Reunion:

Madea's Family Reunion

Madea

In this movie, released in 2006, Tyler Perry plays a pistol carrying grandmother, also playing a smart mouthing older man, and a sleek-looking lawyer in this movie. The movie is set around Madea’s family who are preparing for a family reunion and wedding. But trouble begins to stir throughout the entire movie and vindictiveness and griminess throughout the entire movie. You see Lisa(played by Rochelle Aytes) is getting married to Carlos( played by Blair Underwood) while they are engaged Carlos begins to physically abuses her and begins to threaten her with her life if she left him. Pretty soon she runs, leaving Carlos to go to Lisa’s mother Victoria (played by Lynn Whitfield), who is a goldigging widow who has her hands on her daughter’s inheretance, and forces Lisa to go back to him. In the mean time, Lisa’s sister Vanessa( played by Lisa Arrindell Anderson, no relation) is having internal conflicts with trust men. With the fathers of her two younger children either in jail or want nothing to do with them. But she meets a wonderful man falls hard for him.The realtion ship is tested but they both come out on top.

In the meanwhile, Madea, who is use to the Atlanta court system, is assigned to take care of a teenager Nikki( played by Keke Palmer). This starts off as a challenge for both of the characters, to keep each other from killing each other but towards the end they end up acting as family. That’s the message that Tyler Perry brings through of all of his movies: No matter what the situation, God and your family will be there to help you through it.”

As Cruel as School Children

September 17, 2008

We bring ourselves down
And build ourselves up in disappointment
How fragile we are
So fragile we are, we just don’t show it
We’ll shake up this town
And shoot down the stars for our enjoyment
So sexy we are
So sexy we are, we just don’t know it

-Gym Class Heroes

Now I have to admit that this band has officially become my guilty pleasure. They are the first band I play in the morning. I am always playing them in my car stereo. I have seen them in concert multiple times and every time I see them they get better and better with time. I am one of the first people to hear about them. Also they hail from my native New York! Gym Class Heroes is an old school Hip-Hop mixed in with a hypnotizing drums and guitars this band has made the easy transitions from underground to mainstream. The Album I am review today is “As Cruel as School Children”

First, a little history on Gym Class Heroes, coming from Genva,New York. The band started when Lead Singer Travis McCoy and drummer Matthew McGinley started a band while still in High School. Once the band was formed they started they began to play for local clubs and birthday parties so they can have money in their pockets. They were signed to Peter Wenz’s ( from Fall Out Boy) record label Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen. Once signed they began to preform in small venues, even nabbing a couple of spots in the Wraped Tour in 2004 through this past summer.

“As Cruel as School Children” isn’t there first album though. “…For The Kids” was the first album released under a unknown record label. Followed by “The Papercut Chronicles” in 2004. When they first were release to little fanfare. But after the success of “The Queen and I” and “Papercuts” the band has shot up in hip-hop Indie Craze.

I personally love this album (it seems that I say that about every album I review). I love Travis McCoy. McCoy lyrics seem to be like poetry to every lyrical beat that is produced. Also Each song fits its place. I mean the uplifting lyrics are like poetry to the heart and soul… I love this band and I would recommend letting anybody listen to this. You are just going to have to buy your own copy.

Baby Mama.

September 14, 2008

Alright! I just finished this movie and I thought it was hilarious. I mean funny from the beginning to the end. Lorne Micheals deserves a standing ovation. Baby Mama starring and Sautrday Night Live Alum Tina Fey, and current star Amy Poehler. This movie has everything I would want to find in a Romantic Comedy. Love, Babies and lots and lots of humor.

Here’s the Trailer;

Tina Fey plays a single woman who is having a hard time getting pregnant. So she’s trying everything to have a baby, from adoption, to articfical semenation she is just trying not having a good time in the process. So she hires a “baby mama” to carry her child for nine months. That’s when Amy Poehler’s character comes in, she plays a hardcore “trailer-trash” woman with her equally trashy boyfriend are brought up and agree to have the baby. This is where hilarity insues from child prooofing rooms and gumchewing fights the laughs just keep on coming. There are lessons to be learn throughout the entire movie and everyone ends up being happy, but still everyone has a time of there lives.

Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Micheals took a huge step with this movie and made it his own. Without his genius and Tina Fey’s witty writing this movie would have bombed. So I have to say that this movie is really great and I would recomened this movie to anyone who wants a laugh. GO GET IT!

Beastie Boys: To the 5 Boroughs

September 11, 2008

Yes! My favorite album in the underground hip-hop scene. The only group I know that has gone mainstream and still stayed true to the game. The Beastie Boys!!!!!! Yay! Released in 2004, ‘To The Five Boroughs’, brought the best out from the three New Yorkers! Yet unlike there previous albums, the Beastie Boys have kinda gone political. Some of their songs have been used as a political waker to the younger generation. Some of there song have been on number one charts for a while. I an super excited to tell you, the viewer about it.

Once you put the album you notice there infectious and danceable music, with the song “Ch-Ch-Check It Out” the Beastie Boys haven’t missed a beat since there last album in the late 1990s. They waste no time in making fun of themselves and their strange love for Star Trek. They get right into the groove of the politcal scene with songs as “Right,Right, Now, Now” and “We Got The” urge for young voters to bring up their voices and vote, which just happens to be a pivitol moment for all voters this election year.

Here’s a clip of ‘Ch-Check It Out:’

I love the Beastie Boys, both old and new . I love how they tend to mix all kinds of music into their lyrics. The Lyrics tend to speak to everyone and anyone who would listen, it becomes poetry and sometimes people live by it. In some of their older albums, The Beastie Boys tend to rap about the normal stuff rappers would rap about, drinking, and women. Now they tend to use politics and yes, they still  diss other rappers. I mean why try to step up to them… It’s the Beastie Boys!!!!!!!

So go out and grab “To the 5 Boroughs” It doesn’t matter if they came out before your born, or whether  you were a fan from the very beginning.. This album will get your ‘body movin’….and fix yourself some “brass monkey” to get you in the mood….

V for Vendetta

September 9, 2008
Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot…
-V
This line is basically the background to the movie V for Vendetta.Based off of a Graphic Novel, and with haunting silmilarites to Nazi Germany during World War II; The movie stars Natile Portman( Stars Wars and Garden State) as a navie, who turns in to a political activist thro the help of a masked man only named as “V”, played by Hugo Weaving(Movies).
The movie is set in the year 2015(?). The United States that was once known as a Political and Economic Powerhouse has become a war torn country with a newly revitalized civil war. But I digress the movie is set in London. Due to the fact that the United States have failed miserably, London, not wanting to fall and be a country like the U.S. they begin to form a dictorial goverment. Lead by Chancellor Adam Sutler (played by John Hurt) and his cohorts. The goverments runs everything, the television, news, and even the curfew. If you look deeper into the movie we see that the really the goverment is having a stronghold over the country to prevent an outbreak of riots.
This clip is called the Dominos fall. This clip is where the cheif detective has a hunch about whats to come. and reliazes how the entire country is involved:
The country begins by planting fake attacks and arresting innocent people for the crime the goverment has committed. Soon after, a person who had survived an “attack”, named only V, begins to cause panic among the goverment and the people. Once the country has his attention he begins to help the people understand what and why he is doing. He soons begin to recruit Evey (Nataile Portman) to be the successor of his doing.
When I first saw the movie I viewed it as a violent and gruesome movie. Once I looked at it again, I saw the undertones and what the directors and actors wanted to see. I loved every minute of the movie, and saw that some countries goverment were very corrupt and tempted  to make its people paranoid and scared but its like another quote “V” said
The people shouldn’t be afraid of their goverment. The goverment should be afraid of their people.

I would recommend the movie to anyone who thinks like this. The acting could be better, but the message  and the overtone of the entire movie is phenomenal! V for Vendetta gets an ‘A+’ in my book for its message and the fact that Natalie Portman looks pretty good bald.

The Pierces: 13 Tales of Love and Revenge

September 8, 2008

This duo has become my favorite group, due to their infectious melodies and voices. I view them as rising stars in the folk and even mainstream music. The group is called The Pierces

13 Tales of Love and Revenge

13 Tales of Love and Revenge

This group really isn’t a group to begin with. It’s a sister act. They hail from Alabama, but reside and record in New York City. The children of musician they began to hine thier skills while attending Aurburn University. They soon began to work on albums and moved to New York City. Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge is really there third studio album, the first two albums were flops and no one really noticed them. Until about 2007, the group was on the brink of giving up until they were offered to preform their song “Secret” from Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge on the new hit television show.. “Gossip Girl”

Here’s a video of the Song:

After this preformance then the release of their album came out in the fall. The claims and prasies from critics everywhere.

There album,in case you haven’t notice, is about  love and revenge… The tunes of the song go from falling in love with someone such as(Song), to keeping a secret from someone such as ‘Secret’, to getting even with someone like ‘Kill,Kill,Kill’ and ‘Sticks and Stones’ , they even take the time out and make fun of celebutanes like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan with ‘Boring’. you will love every single minute of this moment song. With their infectious use of banjos and guitars, the melodies will be imprinted in your mind for a while…

I would recommend this song to any girl who is either in love, just broke up with someone and you want to grieve or get even. The Pierces’s songs hit a tone with everyone…GO GET IT NOW

Until Next Time….Stay Fly

Pineapple Express!

September 5, 2008

Alright! Now it’s time for my first movie review of many to come. The movie is David Gordon Green’s Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogan (Superbad,Knocked Up) and James Franco(Spiderman 1 and 2) are paired together as a pot smoking duo who are running from killers. Here’s the Trailer:

This video from a user on YouTube its one of many trailers that many viewers have come across. I first saw this movie I thought it was going to be another one of those pot-smoking movies where the guys are always smoking and making crude jokes about sex and girls. I mean they have that but it actually goes deeper into the plot. Saul Silver and Dylan Denton  are two buddies who of course smoke pot. One night Dylan sees a noutorius druglord, and his partner in crime who happens to be a cop kill an innocent man. Dylan flees but damage is done. The Druglord and the Cop know that someone was watching by the smell of Dylan’s weed..Pineapple express…Now that he is wanted by the druglord and cop, Dylan goes back to his dealer’s house,Saul Silver, and thus a beginning of a hilarious and gut splitting laughter as you see saul and dylan run from the “bad guys.”

The Soundtrack to the movie isn’t too bad either. M.I.A.’s song Paper Planes is used in the promotional trailer and throughout the movie as well as other artist such as Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, and Huey Lewis and the News..

This movie will keep you laughing from the first shot til the very end. It is not another pothead movie. Even though it’s rated-R, I would still recommend this movie to anyone who is able to see this movie to go see it. I am definatly going to get this movie when it comes out on DVD!

Until Next Time…Stay Fly
